Fully Funded Scholarships “MSc” By Research Scholarship: Investigation of CO2 Capture Materials
Skytree, a spinoff from the European Space Agency’s Human Spaceflight Programme, is a carbon dioxide direct air capture (DAC) pioneer. We were just named one of the Netherlands’ 100 Most Innovative Companies, and we’re using our technology to reshape the carbon economy.
Skytree comprises a group of scientists, engineers, designers, and business developers based in Amsterdam’s Science Park who aim to improve air quality for a sustainable future and close the carbon loop.
This project will be essential in establishing linkages between intrinsic material qualities and system-level performance of CO2 capture sorbents as part of our ongoing efforts to improve and optimize our products continuously.
CO2 capture technologies are vital to preserving the environment and our daily life, and the decarbonization process. Sorbents can be used to control CO2 capture and release in various applications, including energy and manufacturing. Adsorption of CO2 onto porous substances is used to capture CO2, whereas desorption allows CO2 to be used for other purposes.
Project Objectives:
The project aims to understand better how CO2 capture materials degrade and perform over time. Different sorbent materials’ adsorption and desorption mechanisms will be evaluated under various environmental circumstances to find crucial parameters impacting their long-term performance. Different physical, chemical, and mechanical characterization techniques can be used to link CO2 capture performance to physical or chemical changes in the materials. These crucial insights will be used to improve our products immediately.
The study will be conducted at Swansea University’s Faculty of Science and Engineering’s cutting-edge research facilities. We are excited to welcome an energetic and creative student who will have the opportunity to visit Skytree in Amsterdam, interact with the team, and apply their knowledge to in-house testing and simulation work.

Eligibility
Candidates should have a 2.1 undergraduate degree (or a non-UK equivalent as defined by Swansea University) or a combination of a degree and equivalent experience at the same level.
By the time they apply, individuals should have met the University’s English Language standards (e.g., IELTS 6.5 overall with 5.5+ in each component).
At the outset of their studies, candidates must have the legal right to reside and work in the United Kingdom (student visas do not apply).
All candidates must:
- Hold/aim to have a minimum of an upper second class (2:1) honors degree (or equivalent) in a relevant Engineering or Physical Sciences discipline by the project start date. A combination of qualifications and/or experience equivalent to that level may also be considered at the discretion of the University;
- Have the legal right to live/work in the UK at the start of your studies;
- Have a residential address in West Wales and the Valleys region (area highlighted in dark pink on the map opposite), or if offered a studentship commit to being a resident in this region upon enrolment; and
- Not be financially able to participate without the award of grant funding i.e., do not have funds in excess of £71,000.
Engineering Doctorate candidates must also:
- Have been ‘ordinarily resident’ in the UK for at least 3 years prior to the start of the studentship i.e. normally residing in the UK apart from temporary or occasional absences.
