The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation donated US$210 million to the University of Cambridge in October 2000 to launch the Gates Cambridge Scholarship program; this is the greatest single grant to a UK university. In October 2001, the first cohort of scholars moved into the residence hall.
Each year, Gates Cambridge awards 80 full-tuition scholarships to exceptional students from outside the United Kingdom who wish to pursue a postgraduate degree at the University of Cambridge. Approximately two-thirds of these grants will be made accessible to Ph.D. candidates, with approximately 25 awards available in the US round and 55 awards available in the International round.
